Kia ora and warm greetings from the team at Shore Trust!

We’re pleased to share a summary of what has been happening over the past few months and what lies ahead for our community and organisation.

The Shore Trust Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on Nov 2025, and the minutes were shared with our whānau, staff, and stakeholders in January 2026. Following that, Shore Trust’s audited financial accounts are now publicly accessible on the Charities Services website, reflecting our commitment to transparency and good governance.

Sector Update – Disability System Changes

Significant changes continue across the New Zealand disability support sector. The disability support funding model has been undergoing reform since December 2025, with services transitioning into a new framework under Disability Support Services (DSS) and the Ministry of Social Development (MSD). These changes focus on standardising access, strengthening planning, and aligning funding with outcomes. In addition, the New Zealand Disability Strategy 2026-2030 has been launched, setting a renewed direction on education, employment, health, housing, and justice for disabled people, oriented around human rights and equity. Government agencies, including Whaikaha, are now beginning implementation planning and monitoring progress.

Community and Whānau Engagement

Last year in August, we hosted our first Family Forum, bringing together residents’ families and supporters in a warm and open space for engagement and feedback. We’re excited to confirm that our second Family Forum is planned for mid-June 2026, with invitations and details to be circulated soon. These gatherings are vital opportunities for us to stay connected and accountable to the people we serve.

Team Growth and Recruitment

We are delighted to share that our recruitment efforts have been successful, we’ve welcomed three new employees into the Shore Trust team. Their skills and passion strengthen our capacity to provide safe, person-centred care across both homes.

We also welcome a new resident who has recently joined our Nile Road house — a valued addition to our community.

Sector Support and Learning

On 5th Feb 2026, our February team meeting, we were privileged to have Lydia Starr from People First NZ speak with our team. Lydia’s insights on lived experience and leadership were invaluable, and we’re pleased to share that she will be extending her engagement by joining residents’ meetings for further conversations.

Governance Update

Last year we said farewell to two long-serving board members and welcomed two new directors to the Trustee Company Board. Their broad expertise strengthens our governance and strategic direction. We are in the process of updating our website to reflect these changes.

Shore Trust News – August 2025

Across Aotearoa, the disability and community support sector are changing and Shore Trust is ready. With deep roots in our community, strong relationships, and a commitment to putting people first, we are well-placed to navigate these shifts and keep delivering the quality care and connection our residents and whānau deserve. Shore Trust team continue to deliver a high quality of care and support and making sure people are connected, engaged and happy.

House Leader Appointments
We are pleased to announce that we have finalised recruitment for our two House Leader positions, ensuring that each home now has dedicated leadership.

- Rachel Mains is leading our Nile Road home, bringing a wealth of experience from her role at Spectrum Care and her personal insights from supporting her own family member with a disability.

- Lorenzo Abellera joins Belmont Terrace, with a nursing background and leadership experience at Agape Trust and Mt Tabor Trust. His enthusiasm for fostering a supportive and empowering environment is already making a positive impact.

Welcome Back Clare Tyler
We are delighted to welcome back Clare Tyler as our Finance and Office Manager. Clare previously worked with Shore Trust, making a significant contribution to our financial processes before leaving to complete her studies. She now returns with enhanced skills, fresh perspectives, and the same dedication and professionalism we so valued.

Resident Activities and Community Engagement
Over recent months, residents have enjoyed a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, community art groups, exercise programmes, swimming, kapa haka, and music at home with Gemo. Our volunteer nutritionist has also been facilitating menu planning sessions to support healthy choices. At Nile Road, we currently have one vacancy and are receiving referrals through Kaikaranga.

Upcoming Funding Changes
The disability sector is transitioning from Ministry of Health contracts to the Whaikaha – Ministry of Disabled People funding model under the DSS Residential Provider Panel. From 1 December 2025, all providers must be part of this panel to continue receiving funding. Shore Trust has submitted its application and is well-prepared for this change, with our rights-based, community-focused approach aligning strongly with the new national service standards.

Family Gatherings
We are introducing regular gatherings with families to strengthen communication and collaboration. The first event will take place in September, and all families will receive correspondence with details. These gatherings will be held every six months and will provide an opportunity for updates, discussion, and feedback.

Time Travels Fast

Kia ora whānau,

As we move further into 2025, Shore Trust continues to grow stronger, thanks to the hard work and commitment of our team, residents, and families.

Shore Trust Highlights:

Community Engagement:
Our residents have been actively participating in local events, strengthening their connections within the community and celebrating inclusion. Our heart goes to Attainable staff and our residents who worked there, as the fire burnt almost all the facility and unfortunatly is not going to be open soon, our residents join the hui organised by attainable team to plan for a new start. With the wealth of resources and activity on Shore we found a music class for Tuesdays.

Staff Development:
We continue to invest in professional development for our team, ensuring that staff have the latest skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality, person-centred support. Our new House leader started at Belmont and soon we have another new member taking over the house leader role in Nile Road house.

Facility Enhancements:
Recent upgrades to our homes have improved accessibility and comfort for our residents. We started the work on Nile road recreational room. Our new gardening project at Nile road is open to all. These changes reflect our commitment to creating safe, welcoming environments where people can thrive

Sector Update:

We are expecting a bit of financial challenge as the Health Sector seems under pressure.

Pay Equity Advancements:
On 6 May 2025, the government announced important steps toward pay equity for disability support workers. This is a significant recognition of the vital role our workforce plays. (NZDSN source)

Leadership Appointment:
Shore Trust is a member of NZDSN and welcomes Debbie Hughes who has been appointed the new Chief Executive of the New Zealand Disability Support Network (NZDSN). Her experience in disability leadership and policy will guide the sector through future opportunities and challenges. (NZDSN source).

June 2025 will be the month for the Shore Trust survey, we use survey-monkey to learn about your feedback, you all will receive an email invite for participation.

Together, we are making Shore Trust a place where people belong, grow, and feel valued.

Kia ora whānau,

As we approach the end of the year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful experiences, achievements, and improvements that have shaped our journey in 2024.

This was my first Christmas gathering with Shore Trust, and I must say it was truly heartwarming to see the team, residents, and families come together in such a meaningful way. The preparation, care, and collaboration that went into the day, especially the efforts from both staff and residents, showed what makes Shore Trust such a special community.

This year, the Board decided to combine the AGM and Christmas celebration into one day. It was a great decision that allowed us to save travel time for families while still ensuring both events were purposeful and enjoyable. The AGM gave us an opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments, acknowledge areas for growth, and share plans for the future.

A Special Thank You
I want to express my gratitude to our incredible team for their hard work, dedication, and adaptability throughout the year. A big thank you also to the Board for their unwavering support and strategic leadership, ensuring that Shore Trust remains a strong and forward-thinking organization.

Improvements and Achievements
Throughout 2024, we have achieved significant milestones, including:

Key facility upgrades, such as improvements of both houses’ environment.
Enhanced processes for document management, resident care plans, and health and safety audits to ensure our systems are robust and efficient.
A renewed focus on team development and training, helping us strengthen the quality of care we provide.

Sector Changes and Our Future
This year brought significant changes within the health and disability sector, in August 2024, the government announced that Disability Support Services (DSS) would transition from Whaikaha-Ministry of Disabled People to the Ministry of Social Development. While these changes present challenges for providers, they also highlight the importance of being a resilient and robust entity. At Shore Trust, we remain committed to delivering high-quality, person-centered care while adapting to sector demands. Our focus on strengthening processes, supporting staff, and engaging with families will continue to position us strongly as we head into the new year.

Looking Forward
We are excited about what 2025 will bring and will continue working towards creating an inclusive, supportive, and thriving environment for our residents and their whānau.

Health & Safety!

A renewed focus on health and safety has been a priority, with updates to our procedures around risk assessment, infection control, and fire safety. Belinda Sproule was appointment as the Shore Trust health and safety representative to ensure ongoing monitoring and compliance with regulatory standards.

Long Service Benefits Implementation:
This year, we introduced a long-service benefits proposal to recognize the dedication and loyalty of our long-serving kaimahi (staff) Tali, Sarah, Michael and Carmela. This initiative includes pay increases based on tenure and a one-off leave reward for those reaching significant service milestones. While subject to funding viability, this benefit demonstrates Shore Trust commitment to retaining and valuing our skilled workforce.

With the incredible support of our dedicated team, Mariana attended her favorite exhibition. A wonderful day of fun, creativity and connection.

Epic Halloween THRILLS!

How SPOOKTACULAR does everyone look in the pic below! October Halloween transformations turned Nile Rd home into a festive freaky wonderland. The people had a spine-tingling and scary fun-filled Halloween, supported by the amazing team at Nile road.
